Jaisohn College Scholarship Program

The Philip Jaisohn Foundation is very pleased to invite scholarship applications from Korean-American and other students who exemplify academic excellence and dedication to healthcare, leadership and services to their schools and communities. It is the 20th year the Foundation has granted scholarships to >200 university students who need financial help.

The Scholarships are in several categories. To be eligible for Scholarships, the applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student as of September each year, who fits the qualification for each scholarship specified below, and is in need of financial support for their education. Please indicate clearly in your application which of the following scholarships you are applying for.

Helen Lee Scholarship

1 recipient, $2,000

This scholarship, sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Manual M. Lee MD, is given to one student who needs financial support for his/her education.

Bong Hak Hyun Memorial Scholarship

2 recipients, $1,500 each

This scholarship is for two students who are planning a career in healthcare and the medical field with evidence of potential, passion and leadership.

H.R. Chung MD Leadership Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,500

The scholarship is given to one student who has shown excellence in leadership in such a variety of activities as extracurricular activities, varsity sports, and community activities.

Jaisohn Journalism Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,500

This scholarship, sponsored by Mr. Tong S. Suhr, Esq. is for a student who is planning a career in journalism with evidence of potential and community service.

Jae + Dae Kim Foundation Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,500

This scholarship sponsored by Jae + Dae Kim Foundation Scholarship,

is for one African – American or Korean American Student who is academically strong committed to community service and demonstrates financial need.

Daniel D. Yun MD Medical Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,500

This scholarship, sponsored by Daniel D. Yun MD, is for a student who is pursuing a medical career with evidence of academic excellence and dedication to healthcare.

Jeong H. Kweon Hope Scholarship

2 recipients, $1,000 each

This scholarship, sponsored by Mrs. Jeong Hee Kweon, is for two students who are pursuing their academic career even in the midst of financial hardship without discouragement.

KNVAP Leadership Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,000

This scholarship, sponsored by the Korean Navy Veteran’s Association of Philadelphia, is for one student who has shown excellence in academics and leadership.

Tang Pharmacy Scholarship

1 recipient, $1,000

This scholarship, sponsored by Mr. Daniel Tang of Tang Pharmacy, is for one student who is pursuing their academic career even in the midst of financial hardship without discouragement.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • Personal Statement (1)
    Please indicate which scholarships you are applying for in the order of preference. If you had applied for a Jaisohn Foundation Scholarship in the past, please also indicate when it was and whether or not you received an award. Interviews may be conducted for the finalists.
  • Resume (1)
  • School Transcript (1)
  • Letter(s) of Recommendation (1 or more)
  • Essay (in English)
    – Topic: “Who is Dr. Jaisohn to me” or “The significance of Dr. Jaisohn’s ideals to Korean Americans”
    At the end of the essay, please add a brief statement (max 100 words) on how you can contribute to and be involved in the activities of Jaisohn Foundation.
  • Documented evidence for financial need.

Note
The winners of the scholarship are required to attend the scholarship award ceremony to be held on at the Jaisohn Auditorium in September. Immediate family members of staff and Board directors of the Foundation are NOT eligible to apply.
