Who is Dr. Philip Jaisohn (Seo Jae-Pil)?
Dr. Philip Jaisohn is a man of many firsts: The first Korean to naturalize as a U.S. citizen (1890), the first Korean to receive a medical degree from any Western institutions (1892), the publisher of the first Korean language newspaper “The Independent,” the organizer of the first Korean American Congress in Philadelphia (1919), the first Chief Advisor after the Liberation of Korea charged with overseeing Korea’s transition to democracy, among others. An outspoken advocate for women’s education and suffrage, equal justice under the law, freedom of speech, civil rights, and public health, Dr. Jaisohn’s accomplishments and legacy are far-reaching. A man beyond his own time, Dr. Philip Jaisohn is a role model to those who want to serve and make a contribution to humanity.
