In commemorating the 150th birthyear of Dr. Philip Jaisohn, the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation is very pleased to announce scholarships, and invite applications, for providing financial assistance to Korean American students who exemplify leadership and service to their school and community. This year is the 16th year of granting the Jaisohn Scholarship Awards.
There are several categories of the Scholarship Awards, i.e., Helen Lee Scholarship, Bong Hak Hyun Memorial Scholarship, Whan Soon Chung Scholarship, Journalism Scholarship, and Jay Lee Social Service Scholarship. To be eligible for the Scholarship Awards, the applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student as of September 2014, who fits the qualification for each scholarship specified below, and is in need of financial support for their education. Please indicate clearly in your application which of the following scholarships you are applying for:
– Helen Lee Scholarship: 2 recipients, $2,000 each
This award will be given to a student who needs financial support for their education desperately.
Sponsor: Helen Lee Scholarship Fund of the Foundation
– Bong Hak Hyun Memorial Scholarship: 2 recipient, $1,500 each
This award is for a student who is planning a career in health care and the medical field with evidence of potential, passion and leadership.
– Jane Song Memorial Scholarship: 2 recipient, $1,500 each
This award is for a nursing student and/or those who are studying in college to pursue a career in the area of “patient care” upon graduation.
– Whan Soon Chung Scholarship: 1 recipient, $1,500 each
This award is for a student who is planning a career in health care and the medical field and is interested in following the footsteps of Dr. Philip Jaisohn as a role model.
-Tai Won Suhr Journalism Scholarship: 1 recipient, $1,000
This award is for a student who is planning a career in journalism with evidence of potential and community service.
– Jay Lee Social Service Scholarship: 1 recipient, $1,000
This award is for a student who has participated in social service activities with evidence of community services and future potential.
Additional scholarship awards may be given to applicants who are not selected for the above award categories as an encouragement.

- Personal Statement (1)
- Resume (1)
- School Transcript (1)
- Letter(s) of Recommendation (1 or more)
- Essay (in English) (Title: “Who is Dr. Jaisohn to me” or “The significance of Dr. Jaisohn’s ideal to Korean Americans”)
- Documented evidence for financial need.
- At the end of the essay, please add a brief statement on how you can contribute to and be involved in the activities of Jaisohn Foundation (max 100 words)
NOTE:
Please indicate which scholarship you are applying for. You should apply for one category only. Interviews will be conducted for finalists.
The recipient of the scholarship is required to attend the scholarship awards ceremony and seminar to be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014.
